Hockey Fights Cancer
I am coming to y'all with a little something heavier today but something that is so important to talk about. Since this is a big giving season, I always urge people to give back to charities or foundations that are doing amazing work to raise money for amazing causes like breast cancer, cancer, or even feeding the homeless. No charity is more important than the other but if you have a special touch or experience with one, I urge you donate in any way that you can. During the month of November it is Cancer Awareness month and my favorite sport has a fantastic movement to help support and raise money for cancer. Every November, the National Hockey League has a Hockey Fights Cancer movement where they do everything they can to help families, patients, and caregivers living with cancer. The NHL does a really nice job with this whole month because it puts some perspective that it's not just a game, it's about so much more.
I wanted to give y'all a little background on the Hockey Fights Cancer movement and how it came to be. Founded in 1998 by the National Hockey League® and the National Hockey League Players' Association, Hockey Fights Cancer™ (HFC) unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families. The initiative gets an assist from players, coaches, officials, equipment managers, front office staff, corporate partners, and fans. Together, the hockey family looks to inspire hope and courage for those who are living with, going through, and moving past cancer. Each of the 31 NHL Clubs will celebrate their own Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
In addition to other HFC activations and messaging, these games will feature lavender dasher boards (lavender representing all cancers), and coaches and broadcasters will be wearing HFC ties. Players celebrating their Hockey Fights Cancer Night will wear special Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys and use lavender stick tape during warmups. Hockey Fights Cancer will, once again, help the American Cancer Society, Canadian Cancer Society, and Movember Foundation provide a better quality of life for patients, caregivers, and their families.
This movement is really close to my heart because I have 3 grandparents who have battled with cancer. I am lucky enough that all 3 of them are still alive and with me today but I know that is not the case for everyone. I have also been lucky enough to be at the Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Fights Cancer Night and there is nothing better than being surrounded by so much love on that night and realizing how many people are just like you and have been touched by cancer in some way. Down below are the amazing jersey's that were made for the Carolina Hurricanes for Hockey Fights Cancer Night. These were their warm-up jersey's and after the game, each of these jersey's were auctioned off for money for all of the proceeds to go to the Hockey Fights Cancer movement. You notice that they are purple to signify the month of Cancer awareness. My favorite part of these jersey's are the names of cancer survivors as well as the people that have been lost to cancer. These names were stitched into the numbers of the all the jersey's as well as the captain and assistant captain marks.
In this season of giving, I highly suggest giving in some way whether it is your time or money. Any type of giveback is greatly encouraged and so helpful to all of the families and people battling cancer.
